A structural foam core is a composite material, usually a thermoset polymer (but can be a thermoplastic) combined with an inert physical gas (such as nitrogen) or a chemical blowing agent during the molding process. The result is not a solid material, but a low-density microcellular foam combined with a high-density shell.

The foam core reduces the overall weight of the material, while the firm skin makes it strong and impact-resistant.
